Week 8: Halloween

Under normal circumstances, I think I would’ve been more homesick this week, considering I’ve gotten more into the Halloween season the last couple of years. I used to go to scary movies and haunted houses with my friends and took my little cousins trunk-or-treating. But in the middle of training, all the days blend together and it’s easy to forget holidays, especially ones not celebrated here.

I decided to try to share a little of that Halloween spirit with my host family. Despite my best efforts, I don’t think they understood much more than it involves candy. My (very) little Darija was enough to explain how kids dress up in costumes and go door-to-door asking for candy, but I couldn’t effectively explain why or the history of how Halloween came from Ireland. At least we could all bond over the Reese’s Peanut Buter Cups and Hershey’s chocolate bars I still had from America.
